Profile
Sant’Angelo in Pontano is a small town that rises on a high height at 473 m. m. between the valley of the river Ete Morto and the valley of the Tenna in a beautiful panoramic position.
The first part of the name is an obvious reference to St. Michael the Archangel, a saint dear to the Lombards, whose image appears on the municipal coat of arms; the second derives from the location of Sant’Angelo in the Pontano gastaldato, a sort of administrative district constituted by the Lombards of the Duchy of Spoleto.
Around the middle of the century. XI the walls were built and Sant’Angelo took on the appearance of a castle that in a small part still retains today. Outside the walls is located the Castle of San Filippo, a fortress house-tower built in the thirteenth century but later modified.
A major cultural initiative is the National Meeting of Poetry and Prose in the City of Sant’Angelo in Pontano, which is held every two years.
