Profile
Acquacanina extends over a predominantly mountainous territory, at 734 m a.s.l. on the Sibillini Mountains. The territory of this locality is now part of the Municipality of Fiastra. There are no ancient finds or reports of settlements in the territory. The history of the small municipality coincides with that of the Abbey of San Salvatore in Rio Sacro founded by the Benedictines along the Rio Sacro Valley in the sixth century. In the sixteenth century the monks abandoned the Rio Valley to move to their dependent Church of Santa Maria de Merigu, founded around the year 1000. The parish church of Rio Sacro founded by the Benedictines in the year 1000 and recently restored has within it remarkable works of art including a wooden group with the Madonna of Rio Sacro and the Child (16th century), a small canvas (Madonna del Suffragio) by Carlo Maratta, a table of the sixteenth century and a fresco (Martirio di San Sebastiano) attributed to Girolamo di Giovanni. Also worth visiting are the ruins of a castle built by the Da Varano family in the fourteenth century in Vallecanto, with the interior the coeval church of Santa Margherita adorned inside with two frescoes by Girolamo di Giovanni; the Church of the Madonna del Vallone, in the locality of Campicino, which houses monumental Baroque altars and a canvas depicting the Deposition, of the Roman school of the XVII century. In the area you can take walks and excursions during the year. The location is ideal for cross-country skiing: there are in fact five rings of cross-country slopes.
